Coming to Squamish… Sixth Annual Tech Rescue Academy

Now in its sixth year, the Technical Rescue Academy brings a collection of courses - taught by top instructors - specifically designed for fire fighters, search & rescue volunteers, and industrial ERT personnel.  Students join us from across Canada to expand their operational range by taking one or more of the Academy courses.

This year, students can choose from a selection of nine courses (check out the full schedule below), each of which meets a unique set of needs.

Technical Rope Rescue Operator: This 5 day course provides a thorough introduction to technical rope rescue and covers the fundamental of low, steep and high angle rope rescue.  This course delivers skills that have endless applications, including accessing and moving personnel, equipment and casualties.

Technical Rope Rescue Technician: This 4 day course sets the standard for technical rope rescue training. The skills and knowledge covered in this course are relevant for all other technical rescue disciplines including swiftwater, surface ice, confined space, trench, cave and light structural collapse.

Rope ProBoard Evaluation: A 2 day ProBoard Evaluation tests candidates against the NFPA 1006 Standard for Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications as outlined by the ProBoard Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (or “ProBoard”), an international accreditation system for fire service organizations. Raven Rescue hosts these evaluations through a partnership with the District of North Vancouver District Fire and Rescue Services, a ProBoard accredited testing agency in BC.

Swiftwater Rescue Technician Level 1: This 3 day comprehensive swiftwater course prepares personnel to enter moving water to perform "go" rescues. It emphasizes identifying risks, self rescue, and the various options for rescuing others, as well as the decision-making process required to chose the most appropriate rescue approach.

Swiftwater Rescue Technician Advanced: Expand Swiftwater Rescue Technician Level 1 training into the demanding realm of extreme whitewater, canyon environments, and night operations. This 3 day course focusses on advanced rescue swimming and non-motorized boat handling skills required for "go" rescues in Class III+ swiftwater, as well as high angle rope rescue skills in difficult-to-access areas like canyons and gorges, and operating in low visibility or darkness.

Swiftwater Recovery Specialist: With a curriculum designed by international experts from Rescue 3, this 2 day course explores the complexities and techniques of body recovery from shallow depth swiftwater environments.

Rescue From Vehicles In Water: The 1 day course explores the advanced swiftwater and technical rope rescue techniques necessary when responding to incidents involving vehicles in moving water. The curriculum includes vehicle behaviour, vehicle stabilization, and risk mitigation, as well as access techniques and casualty extrication. It features a secure in-water training vehicle in a controlled river environment for a realistic learning experience.

Confined Space Operator: The 4 day Confined Space Rescue Operator (CSRO) course introduces the knowledge and skills required by personnel to operate safely and effectively during confined space rescues and be an active part of a confined space rescue team. Operator-level training is appropriate for many confined spaces emergency response teams (and if you're not sure if it's right for your team, check out this infographic).

Confined Space Technician: This 4 day course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and efficiently participate in, and supervise team members in, the performance of a technical rescue into high hazard, complex, IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) confined spaces.

AMAZING course. The surface ice safety training was the best course I have ever taken. I liked that there was some simple first aid and hypothermia components included in the course. The instructor, Frank, was awesome. He was easy to talk to, answered questions quickly but didn’t assume answers. He got back to us regarding a question asked that he had to research the answer for. Frank used the time well, and was adaptive to the class needs and skill levels. The course helped me get over my fear of ice/falling through, especially since I gained the nerve to do a polar dip afterwards. It helped me understand the formation and melting pattern of ice and ice weaknesses. The equipment used was simple and easy. The textbook and field guide are great references, and the field guide is simple and easy to understand and read. Overall 10/10 for the course and instructor.
